New year, new beginnings. We all seem to have been through a lot last year. And if most of my friends' opinions reflect the entire population of the world (which I know it doesn't, but for the sake of this writing let's say it does), I'll tell you what I told them as well: last year may be tough, but you are tougher.
Starting the new year with good vibes sets the tone for the rest of the year. Recently in a TikTok (unfortunately for the world, TikTok is where I earn all my knowledge) post, the world-renowned physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson mentioned that it's utterly pointless, as it has no astronomical relevance or importance, to put so much focus on a moment in time such as the midnight of New Year's, especially when it is not celebrated at the same time all around the world due to different time zones and such. And to top it all off, he even said it was completely made up!! The audacity. Now, I love this man. But no one is taking New Year's Eve away from me.
Do you know why? I genuinely believe it is an opportunity of growth and reflection. It is a celebration of coming through, a time for new beginnings, new resolutions, reflecting on your visions and improvements. Rethink your dreams, goals, and relationships; it is a beautiful time to start over. It is a rare occasion such as your birthdays, but this time the whole world celebrates this moment with you even though it is not simultaneous. And that, I think, is so beautiful and moving. But of course not everyone will be on the same boat with me.
What are some good changes you can bring to this year?
• Cultivating Kindness, Empathy, and Compassion
I think the world can do with a little more kindness, empathy, and compassion. Is this something maybe we all can do? And I don't mean kindness only to people who believe in the same things you do, but also towards those with whom we disagree. Because selective kindness isn't doing much.
• Striving for Healthier Lifestyles
Let's aim for healthier lifestyles? Shall we. Early bedtimes can lead to longer and more productive days. Enough sleep will be life-changing to your brain chemistry and also pleasure centers. So many of us constantly feel depressed and wonder why. And like half of that will change once you start sleeping well, and eating healthy.
• Embracing Growth and Resilience
Let's grow and expand. Let's learn new things, try out new things? Work on more projects, chase your dreams even if you may fail. Just try, put yourself out there. Failing is a great sign of courage, cuz you dared to try. And don't let failures push you back, but rather allow them to teach you better and make you more confident. This is a sign to chase your dreams even if they may scare you.
• Nurturing Relationships for Happiness
Sort out our relationships. It's recorded that most of our happiness stems from the relationships around us, be it family, friends, or lovers. So nurture the things that bring you most happiness. Don't push away people who want to love you and be there for you. Don't for a second think you don't deserve good things, because darling, you do! You deserve everything wonderful, you just have to let it in sometimes. And I'm not saying it will always work out, sometimes it won't. But that again isn't a reflection of your worth, that's just the universe's timing. Have faith and believe in yourself.
And while we are at this, let's also let go of the relationships that aren't good for us. It will be hard but it will do wonders to your mental space. Take care of you like no one else would.
• Embracing Confidence and Self-Worth
Be confident. Know your worth, believe it, live it! We've all been through things in life that at one point or another have made us question our abilities and entirety. Throw all of those out of your head and remember the time when you were whole, and try to reconnect with her. Do all the things that made you so childishly happy even if they may seem silly today, because that child in you being sad maybe what's holding you back today. Nurture yourself, you are everything and more. And let no one tell you otherwise.
If you, like many of us, hold a tendency of seeking validation through others, turn that lens towards you, and find that validation within. Why do you need someone else to tell you your value? Aren't you priceless? Don't you know that already? You do, you just need to remind yourself sometimes.
Now, consider all of these and advice from a friend with a warm heart. All I want is the best for you this year. Go places, live your best life! Happy New Year 2024, everyone. May we have an amazing amazing year filled with love and laughter, surrounded by loved ones. Amen. 🧿 🩵
