There is a clear connection between our health, lifestyle, and overall quality of life. How we live our daily lives from our habits and jobs to the activities we engage in and the food we consume significantly influence both our mental and physical well-being. Many individuals have had firsthand experience of living in both serene island settings and bustling city environments. When we made the transition to city living, our once vibrant lifestyle took a significant turn. Our daily routines, living arrangements, and surroundings went through a notable transformation.
Today, I want to share my observations about the changes that I have experienced when transitioning from a rural island to an urban city. There are both positive and negative aspects to this transformation, and I will discuss what we may have missed during this significant change in our lives.
The capital city, Male', is believed to be one of the most populous and congested cities in the world. Due to the concentration of infrastructure, opportunities, and facilities in Male', many people have migrated from the islands to the city. The housing crisis we are facing today has prompted all the candidates in this year's election to include solutions for this issue in their manifesto.
This has been a long-standing issue, but the solutions that have been implemented to address it are not as effective as previously thought by the governing bodies. Hulhumale city is experiencing increasing congestion as well. Large families are living together in cramped spaces to access better job opportunities and other facilities. During this process, we are sacrificing our sanity, peace, and physical well-being.
We have indeed left behind a lot on the islands, and in a way, we have also diminished the beauty of Male', which was once as beautiful as any other island in this country.
Here are some of the things that have impacted us and that we have missed out on during the change.
Spacious Living to Congested Living
On islands, we have the luxury of living in spacious homes that truly feel like home. Our houses are huge and mostly come with both a backyard and a front yard on the ground floor. We don't have to worry about living in congested spaces. Since most of our homes in the islands have traditional house structures, we can experience the weather more intimately. When it rains, we can hear and enjoy the sound of the rain, and when it's sunny, we can bask in the warmth of the sun. This can uplift our mood and make us feel more alive.
During sunny days, we used to play various outdoor games in the backyard. Now that we are living in apartments in Male', I think this is one thing we miss a lot. Sometimes, we don't even know what the weather is like unless we go to the balcony or open a window in the room. Many people live in places without balconies and with fewer windows, making it difficult to gauge the weather. Living in the city area, not only do we miss out on fun activities, but we also can't fully appreciate the weather or the environment.
Green Oasis to Concrete Jungle
Living in the concrete jungle can sometimes make us long for the tranquility and respite of nature. Research has shown that being surrounded by trees and green spaces can have a positive impact on our mental well-being. The islands, with their lush greenery, provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation and rejuvenation. From enjoying the shade of towering trees to basking in the tropical vibes, it's no wonder you miss that connection with nature while living in the city.
Living in the Greater Male Area, especially in Male' city, there's a noticeable lack of trees. Sadly, many trees have been chopped down for the sake of development. However, to make amends, various parks with more green spaces have been created in different districts of Male' as well as Hulhumale City. We all crave that peaceful green space where we can unwind and connect with nature, but when it's packed with residents from both cities, it can feel like a chaotic zoo. It's no wonder many of us opt to stay at home or head to a restaurant to escape the hustle and bustle.
Physically Active to Sedentary
In the islands, it feels like we all have something to do without much planning. With empty roads and abundant green spaces right outside our front doors, there are plenty of opportunities to explore and move around. You may not necessarily need to do exercises if you live an active lifestyle in the islands. Living in rural areas has its perks, especially when it comes to staying active. You have the freedom to step out of your house, move around, and be physically active whenever you please. This not only helps you maintain your fitness level but also gives a much needed boost to your mental well-being.
In city life, we tend to move around frequently, either using public transportation or our own vehicles. If you truly want to get fit and stay in shape, there are a few options available. One option is to invest in a gym membership, which may require spending some money. Alternatively, you can go running on busy streets. However, it's important to note that being physically active in the city requires effort, and many of us struggle with motivation in this regard.
Clean Air to Polluted Air
When it comes to air quality, the islands have a clear advantage over bustling cities. With abundant greenery and fewer vehicles, the air in these serene havens is noticeably cleaner. Breathing in fresh, high-quality air becomes a given, allowing you to enjoy island life without constantly worrying about potential health issues.
In Male' area, the air quality is a pressing concern due to the high presence of vehicles and industrial activities. The combination of exhaust fumes and pollutants emitted by these sources can have detrimental effects on both our mental well-being and physical health. The constant exposure to polluted air can lead to respiratory problems, exacerbating existing conditions or even causing new ones. It's essential that we address this issue seriously, not only for the sake of our immediate environment but also for the long-term health of individuals residing in this area.
Unified Community to Disconnected Community
Living on an island brings a unique sense of belonging. In such close-knit communities, it's hard not to know everyone around you. Whether you're a long-time resident or a newcomer, the island community welcomes you with open arms. There's something comforting about knowing that your neighbors are always there for you, ready to lend a helping hand when needed. It's this strong sense of friendship that makes living on an island truly special.
However, when it comes to the bustling city area of Male', this sense of community seems to dissipate, leaving behind an atmosphere where people live like strangers in their own neighborhood.
Simplicity to Chaos
In our pursuit of progress and opportunity, we inadvertently leave behind the simplicity that comes with a peaceful island life. We trade the tranquil sounds of waves crashing against the shore for the bustling noise of city streets. In choosing the chaos of city life, we sacrifice the ease and simplicity that once defined our days.
As we reflect on these changes, it is clear that our transition from isolated islands to city life was not without its challenges. Yet amidst all these transformations, there is still room for adaptation and finding new ways to embrace an active lifestyle in this urban landscape.
While our childhood memories may be filled with island adventures, there is still potential for excitement and activity even in this new chapter of our lives. The key lies in embracing change and discovering opportunities for growth within our transformed surroundings. Let's stay optimistic!
