In this presidential race we have 8 candidates contending for our nation's future.

โ€œWho Do We Vote For?โ€

Isn't this the question that has plagued each of us in recent weeks? While some of us have already made up our minds, others find themselves in a perplexing dilemma.

The Maldives has a long history of turbulent politics. Betrayals and coalition breakdowns are not recent developments; they've been part of our political landscape for years.

Let's rewind a bit to Ameen Didi, who, despite personally favoring a constitutional monarchy, declined the throne for the sake of his people.

During his tenure, while he was seeking medical treatment abroad, his own Vice President fomented opposition that led to one of the darkest chapters in our history, when our very first president was forced to kneel โ€“ a horrifying event, to say the least.

And this is not an isolated incident; consider the case of Rehendhi Khadeeja. She killed for the throne more than once, even at the cost of her siblings and husbands. So, Iโ€™m not reaching when I say this inclination towards treachery runs deep in our political DNA.

Now, let's look at the upcoming presidential election. With eight candidates in the race, a second round of voting appears highly likely, as our constitution stipulates that a candidate must secure at least 51% of the votes to win. With such 8 candidates running, achieving that threshold becomes a challenging task for any single candidate. But if they win from the first round, that would be a massive win.

In a world where prospects appear bleak for those without generational wealth, we hold onto hope for a brighter future, but can we realistically expect it?

Now, as we assess what these candidates promise, remember that their personalities may not define their actions in office. Power, money, and corrupt agendas often exert their influence, regardless of the individual.

So, as we delve into the pledges of these contenders, I hope it aids you in making your voting decision. Whether we like it or not, the quality of our lives for the next five years hinges on the outcome of this election.

Letโ€™s look at the pledges from the 8 candidates and see where their policies will lead us.

Itโ€™s essential for us and policymakers to critically assess each candidate's promises. Some pledges may indeed be overly ambitious or lacking in concrete plans for implementation.

Ultimately, we should also consider the feasibility of these pledges, the track record of the candidates in delivering on past promises, and the broader economic and political context in the Maldives when evaluating the viability of these ambitious proposals. While aspirational pledges can inspire hope, a realistic and well-thought-out approach is essential for achieving meaningful progress in the country.

In examining the pledges put forth by the eight presidential candidates, it becomes evident that each candidate brings their own vision and priorities for the future of the Maldives. These manifestos encompass a wide array of policies and reforms that touch upon nearly every aspect of governance and society.

As we, the people of the Maldives evaluate these pledges and choose their next leader, we face the task of selecting a candidate whose vision aligns with our aspirations for the future.

The upcoming election will ultimately determine the path the Maldives takes in the coming years, and the success of these pledges will depend on effective implementation and continued commitment to their ideals. The nation's destiny lies in our hands as we cast our votes and shape the direction of our beloved country.
