This year’s Eid is now around the corner. Eid al fitr or as we call it ‘Kuda Eid’ is marked to celebrate the ending of Ramadan and the success of the month. Otherwise called the ‘feast of breaking fast’ which lasts for a duration of 3 days. Despite its brevity, Kuda Eid is one of my favorite times of the year. Sadly, this year's Kuda Eid falls on a weekend, starting from Friday and lasting until Sunday. Therefore, you may be wondering what can be done to get that Eid vibes during such a short period of time. I want to share some of the ways that you can get involved in celebrating Eid and enjoy it to the fullest.
Distribute Eid Sai to Your Neighbors
In my family, we prepare a variety of foods for Eid Sai (Tea) to start off the first day of the Eid. We enjoy this morning tea with our family after Eid prayers. So if it is a custom in your family, you can distribute some of the Foods that you have prepared with your close neighbors. If you are not used to it and you want to build a good relationship with your neighbors this can be a good start as well.
Smile and Greet Everyone
What better day to smile and greet everyone around you than Eid? Eid is all about happiness and unity. Show more smiles to people while you are driving or walking, and to those you see on your way to Eid prayers and other places. If you are comfortable, extend your Eid greetings to them even if they are strangers or foreigners. We are one Ummah, and this simple act can make everyone in your community feel included in celebrating Eid and build ties to each other as Muslims.
Connect with Family and Friends
Eid is a holiday for us, so a lot of people are free on Eid day. This is an opportunity for you to visit your family members and reconnect with them, or to meet friends who you haven't seen for a while. Bond with your loved ones and make great memories! You can also take some Eid gifts for them, or you can organize a little fun activity to exchange gifts. Remember, you don't necessarily have to take any gifts, your presence will be enough for them. For those living far away, you can make a nice Eid greeting card and send it digitally through social media apps.
Volunteer in Eid Activities
Previously, only ‘Bodu’ Eid was celebrated with a lot of activities in the island communities. However, in recent years, ‘kuda’ Eid is also celebrated with a lot of fun and entertaining activities. Each year many events are held even in Male and Hulhumale’. Fenkulhi is one event that I have enjoyed in particular. There are other activities like different sports activities and events like ‘kudakudhinge haveeru’ and even shows during the night. Within your capabilities, you can volunteer to be a part of organizing such activities or events in your community.
Join Community events
I know that we all will feel like staying at home to enjoy our weekends during this Eid. But Kuda Eid only comes once a year and why not make the most out of it. Life is about living in the moments so live in those Eid moments and make memories with your loved ones. You don’t have to attend all of the events, just choose one and get that Eid vibe going. If you are in a very relaxed mood, you can still join charity events by donating money online.
Make Dua for your Community
Especially on a joyous day like Eid, it is important to make a dua wishing wellness and prosperity to the community you belong to and pray for the Muslim Ummah as a whole. May Allah grant us all His blessings and peace, and may we find happiness and prosperity in our lives.
Show gratitude to your blessings and enjoy a happy Fitr Eid this year with your loved ones. Eid Mubarak!
